Windows World No More
Tuesday, February 20th, 2007A silent revolution has swept over the world with the average American user knowing little to nothing about its far-reaching impact and future: a free (as in cost) and free (as in freedom) operating system is widely available, and most importantly, has emerged as a viable desktop alternative. Under strange monikers like Ubuntu, Mandriva, Gentoo, Slackware, Fedora, openSUSE, and many others, the GNU/Linux operating system has reached a level of stability and user-friendliness long believed to be a Windows-only domain.
Never heard of these jewels of the free software world? It’s not surprising, although if past trends are any indication, it won’t be too long before that changes. Ubuntu in particular has gained a reputation as a easy to learn, yet powerful distribution of Linux that one can easily install alongside their copy of Windows and get their feet wet in the open source world. Once you’ve taken the plunge, there’s a good chance you’ll never turn back.
Microsoft, you’ve been warned. . .
